2026 summer in review

Thank you! Whether you supported us by walking, cycling, donating, or introducing someone new to our work, you have brought us one step closer to a clean and healthy Lake Winnipeg.

If you’re familiar with the Lake Winnipeg Foundation, you know that members are at the heart of our work. Without you, our advocacy on behalf of the lake would not be possible. If you’re new to the work we do, welcome! With the funds raised this summer, we’ll continue our work to collect data and promote evidence-based solutions.

Together, we hold the tools needed to create meaningful change for Lake Winnipeg.

walk for water: victoria beach

We kicked off our summer season with the Walk for Water in Victoria Beach on July 19. Early Sunday morning, the Village Green came alive with smiling faces, children in tie-dyed t-shirts, and the cheerful sounds of Forest Room Ukulele. Victoria Beach Mayor Penny McMorris officially started the walk, sending more than 200 participants on their way. The community’s enthusiasm was unmistakable as friends and families chose to spend a sunny morning walking for Lake Winnipeg.

Following the walk, LWF Executive Director Alexis Kanu welcomed participants back to the Green and spoke about the power of Lake Winnipeg Foundation members to create meaningful change. She highlighted the ten years of data collected by the Lake Winnipeg Community-Based Monitoring Network, and the impact that this dataset will have in supporting a focused approach to phosphorus reduction efforts.

A special thank you to our sponsors, Quintex, James Richardson & Sons Limited, EY, and Manitoba Hydro, whose generosity helped make this event possible. We are also grateful to volunteer chair Kae Edwards and the organizing committee, whose dedication and hard work brought the event to life.

walk for water: dunnottar

On July 26, we returned to Dunnottar for another successful Walk for Water! Despite the humid morning, community members arrived to support solutions for Lake Winnipeg. David Horne set the walk in motion, and attendees completed a scenic 3.5 km route along the lake.

The energy remained high as walkers gathered back at Ponemah Beach Central. Alexis shared LWF's long-standing connection with the Village of Dunnottar and highlighted how the community's commitment has been instrumental to our work from the very beginning. Leigh Patterson then drew the winning tickets for the raffle. The raffle was a success, with a variety of prizes donated from local and Winnipeg businesses.

A special thank you to our sponsor, Johnston Group, whose continued support helps make Dunnottar Walk for Water possible. We are also grateful to our organizing committee, volunteers, prize donors, and everyone who participated. Your enthusiasm and dedication help drive meaningful action for Lake Winnipeg.

bike to the beach

On August 7, fifty-six riders embarked on an impressive test of endurance, cycling from Winnipeg to Victoria Beach in support of Lake Winnipeg. With clear skies and only a flat tire or two along the way, the ride unfolded smoothly. Less than five hours later, the first cyclists began arriving at the gates of Victoria Beach, where a crowd of cheering supporters welcomed them.

After completing the journey, participants joined family and friends at the Clubhouse to celebrate with pizza and beer. Bike to the Beach committee member Colleen Kramer thanked the many people who made this success possible, including event sponsors: Canada Life, Parrish & Heimbecker, Pollard Banknote, Qualico, Quadrant Private Wealth, Crosier Kilgour, Fort Group, Birchwood, Woodcock Cycle Works, and Manitoba Cycling Association. We are grateful to everyone who took part in Bike to the Beach and helped support the ongoing work to protect and restore Lake Winnipeg.
