The May long weekend marks the unofficial beginning of cottage season in Manitoba. As lake-lovers prepare to head out to the lake, the Lake Winnipeg Foundation (LWF), The Gordon Foundation and RBC Foundation are embarking on a new partnership to drive evidence-based water stewardship across the Lake Winnipeg watershed.

On World Water Day, the Lake Winnipeg Foundation and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) are releasing a report recommending an interim retrofit to Winnipeg’s largest sewage treatment plant. Manitoba Sustainable Development is currently seeking public input on a draft regulation governing water drainage that will impact wetlands across Manitoba.

The government’s stated goal is to streamline the approval process for routine drainage/water retention work and provide enhanced wetland protection through a new requirement to compensate for wetland drainage. Heading out to the lake for the Canada Day long weekend? We’ll be at Charlie Wall Park on Sunday, July 1, for the Hillside Beach Community Association’s Family Fun Day! This free event will feature races for all ages, prizes, a BBQ as well as Canada Day cupcakes!

Stop by our table to chat about our work to improve the health of our shared waters, pick up free educational material and purchase some of our unique fundraising products.

Join us in cheering on Alex Martin as he begins his 1,750 km trip along Lake Winnipeg’s shoreline. This passionate, 18-year-old kayaker is spending two months of his summer paddling to promote water stewardship and the recreational merit of the lake.

Alex’s launch will take place at Grand Marais Point, in Grand Beach Provincial Park – all are invtied to meet at 10 a.m. on the beach in front of Parking Lot 1, just after the gate entrance while driving down Highway 12.
