Each year, lake-lovers of all ages channel their hobbies and talents into fundraising events for a healthy Lake Winnipeg: from lemonade stands to art shows to recreational activities!

Here are just some of the events and initiatives happening this summer:

Lake Winnipeg PaperCut Maps (ongoing initiative): Multi-media artist Gail Bacosa-Puhawan creates beautiful bathymetric maps of Manitoba lakes using cut paper, with relative depths illustrated by use of gradients of blue cardstock. We’re excited to be taking part in a not-to-be-missed event!

Alex Martin is a 19-year-old kayaker, local to Victoria Beach. Last summer, Alex paddled solo around the entire shoreline of Lake Winnipeg to raise awareness for water stewardship.

Presented by the Victoria Beach Walk for Water Committee, this evening event is your opportunity to hear from Alex about his adventure, enjoy his photo presentation captured from the remote coastlines of Lake Winnipeg, and learn how this experience has shaped his view of this important lake.

Join us at Charlie Wall Park on Sunday, June 30, for the Hillside Beach Community Association’s Family Fun Day! This free event starts at 10 am and will feature races, games and prizes for all the children (and a few physical challenges for their parents and grandparents, too!), as well as a BBQ as well as a BBQ, drinks and treats.

Stop by our table to say hello, learn more about our work to improve the health of Lake Winnipeg, pick up free educational material and purchase some of our unique fundraising products.

Walk for Water is the largest grassroots fundraising event in support of a healthy Lake Winnipeg – and participating is easy: Use our Walk for Water pledge form to collect donations from friends, family, co-workers and teammates. Classically trained guitarist and luthier Fred Casey returns for another season of summer concerts at the Whytewold Emporium!

In what has now become an annual tradition, Fred donates all money raised through these busker-style “Playing for the Lake” gigs to LWF.

This year’s concert schedule is as follows:

  • May 12 (Mother’s Day), 11 am to 2 pm
  • May 31, 6 pm to 9 pm
  • June 21, 6 pm to 9 pm
  • July 26, 6 pm to 9 pm
  • August 16, 6 pm to 9 pm

Join us in Gimli on Sunday, June 30, for the Save the Lake Fish Fry!

Organized by the Gimli Yacht Club and the Kiwanis Club of Gimli & District, this family-friendly fundraising event features education, fun and food – all in support of a healthy Lake Winnipeg.

When: June 30 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Where: Outside* the Gimli Yacht Club (Gimli Harbour; 95 1st Ave)

All proceeds raised will be donated to the Lake Winnipeg Foundation and the Lake Winnipeg Research Consortium (LWRC).

The May long weekend marks the unofficial beginning of cottage season in Manitoba. As lake-lovers prepare to head out to the lake, the Lake Winnipeg Foundation (LWF), The Gordon Foundation and RBC Foundation are embarking on a new partnership to drive evidence-based water stewardship across the Lake Winnipeg watershed.

This collaborative, three-year project has been made possible with a $600,000 gift from RBC Foundation.
