Update: Bike to the Beach 2020 a huge summer success

Perfect weather conditions, the camaraderie of fellow cyclists and a record-breaking amount of money raised in support of a healthy Lake Winnipeg: in all aspects, the inaugural Bike to the Beach ride was a huge success.

Forty-three cyclists took part in the 2020 “founders’ ride,” a 130 km route from Winnipeg to Victoria Beach on Aug. 7. Looking sharp in matching jerseys and helped along by the energy of their fellow riders (and a much-welcomed south wind!), the group rose to the challenge – and had a lot of fun, too.

In addition to the passion and determination of the cyclists involved, Bike to the Beach 2020 also saw an incredible outpouring of community support, raising over $57,000 for LWF and a healthy lake! This is the most-successful fundraiser in our organization’s 15-year history!

Thank you to Bike to the Beach 2020 sponsors Pollard Family Foundation, Canada Life, Quadrant Private Wealth, Price Industries and Spark Power for their community leadership and commitment to healthy water.

Thanks, too, to the following businesses and organizations who provided invaluable partnership, support and assistance with planning, health and safety precautions and equipment, and day-of logistics: Manitoba Cycling Association, Woodcock Cycle Works, Habitat for Humanity, Criti Care, Mountain Bean Coffee, Tim Horton’s Beausejour, Sherwood Grocery, South Basin Photo Works and the Victoria Beach Clubhouse. Special shout-out to Colleen and the other members of the enthusiastic cheering squad who greeted the riders at the VB gate!

And finally, a huge thank you to the 2020 cyclists for their incredible effort, and to the many volunteers and supporters whose hard work and generosity made this new event such a success.

As all of us continue to adapt to new circumstances, LWF remains committed to translating science into solutions for the health of Lake Winnipeg. Thank you to everyone involved with Bike to the Beach 2020 for making this work possible.
