Happy holidays from LWF
Dear LWF supporter,
Thank you for your continued interest in Lake Winnipeg over the past year; your ongoing support is a source of inspiration and motivation for all of us here at the foundation.
Provincial budget 2019
This year’s advocacy work concluded with our submission to the Manitoba government in advance of Budget 2019.
We highlighted the government’s responsibility for the sustainable management of provincial water resources and recommend provincial investment in four key areas: protecting Manitoba’s threatened wetlands; improving Winnipeg wastewater treatment; data sharing; and preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species.
You can read our full submission here.
Opportunity for action: proposed drainage regulations
The provincial government is seeking input on a draft regulation guiding water drainage and water control projects. LWF will be submitting detailed recommendations in the new year and encourage you to take part in this process, as well.
Let the government know the health of Lake Winnipeg matters to you. Affirm your support for:
- A province-wide drainage moratorium on all Class 3, 4 and 5 wetlands to protect existing natural infrastructure and reduce the costs of flood, drought and water quality deterioration;
- A comprehensive provincial wetland inventory (including maps) to guide decision-making;
- Financial and human resources to enable a robust auditing program of both registered and licensed drainage projects; and
- Planning for a five-year, evidence-based evaluation of ecological outcomes achieved under newly proposed drainage regulations.
The deadline for feedback is Jan. 19, 2019.
Holiday office closure
Our office will close at noon on Monday, Dec. 24, for the holidays. We will reopen on Monday, Jan. 7, 2019.
Wishing you a wonderful holiday season and a happy new year,
The LWF team
