Federal advocacy opportunity on now – plus, an update on Winnipeg sewage

Dear LWF supporter,

We hit the ground running in 2021. The arrival of the new year brought important advocacy opportunities – and together with our members and supporters, we have been busy speaking up for Lake Winnipeg.

Your voice matters. Please consider joining us in pushing for evidence-based solutions.

Take part in a national consultation about water: deadline March 1

In our last e-update, we let you know about a new position paper, Five Things the Federal Government Must Do for Lake Winnipeg, jointly created by LWF and our partners at the Lake Winnipeg Indigenous Collective.

A public consultation is now underway on the establishment of a new Canada Water Agency. This is an opportunity for citizens from coast to coast to coast to join in a national conversation about water and remind federal decision-makers that Lake Winnipeg needs immediate attention.

We encourage you to participate in this consultation using our position paper to inform your submission: share the specific recommendation that resonates most with you, or share the entire paper. Want more information? Check out our Instagram and Facebook pages, where we’ve been diving deeper into each of our five recommendations.

The federal consultation period ends on March 1, 2021.

Update on interim phosphorus removal at Winnipeg’s north end sewage treatment plant

On Feb. 9, Winnipeg’s Standing Policy Committee on Water and Waste, Riverbank Management and the Environment recommended funding for interim chemical phosphorus removal at the North End Water Pollution Control Centre (NEWPCC).

This is an important step to protect Lake Winnipeg and we commend city councillors for investing in concrete action that will have measurable results. However, we continue to have concerns about timelines and compliance.

Over the past two years, citizen advocacy has successfully moved Winnipeg’s sewage situation onto the agenda of local politicians. Help us continue this momentum by reaching out to your city councillor. Head to our website for more information and a template you can use to craft your personalized message! CBC coverage of this issue is also available online.

The motion approved by the Standing Policy Committee will be considered by Winnipeg City Council on Feb. 25.

We remain committed to bringing the concerns of lake-lovers to the tables of decision-makers, advocating for change and coordinating action to improve the health of Lake Winnipeg.

Thank you for your continued interest in this important work,

The LWF team
