Walk for Water 2015, Indigenous collaboration and more!

Dear LWF supporter,
Walk for Water 2015
Our annual Lake-a-thon fundraising campaign heats up every summer with the arrival of our signature Walk for Water, the largest grassroots funding event in support of a healthy Lake Winnipeg. These family-friendly community walks are a great way to be part of the solution – and have some fun, too!
This season, walks will be taking place in Dunnottar (July 26), Gimli (Aug. 9) and Victoria Beach (Aug. 9).
You can participate in two ways:
- As a walker: Download and print our pledge form (or pick one up at a participating location near you), then collect pledges from the lake-lovers in your life. New this year, you can let us know you’re coming by pre-registering your attendance. Bring your completed pledge form and the money you raised to one of our events.
- As a pledger: Donate to someone you know or to Walk for Water in general. Your support will help sustain our ongoing work to restore and protect the health of our great lake.
Make sure to check out our website for more information about all of our Walk for Water 2015 events, including helpful tips and constantly updated details about the amazing prizes to be won and other special treats.
Indigenous collaboration
Lake health and the social and economic health of communities is intrinsically linked. LWF is pleased to have been given the opportunity to help foster the development of an Indigenous voice for Lake Winnipeg. We’ve been partnering with Brokenhead Ojibway Nation (BON), Norway House Cree Nation (NHCN) and other communities to facilitate the creation of the Lake Winnipeg Indigenous Collective (LWIC), which will bring a much-needed perspective to ongoing water stewardship efforts.
So far, LWF has assisted with the coordination of three gatherings; the most recent of which took place on June 2 and 3, bringing together representatives from nine First Nations. It’s been exciting to witness LWIC’s evolution, and we remain committed to supporting its members as they begin working towards the collective’s mission: “to seek healthy and equitable solutions for our waters and our people from the diverse communities who have a relationship with Manitoba’s sacred great lake.”
We’re on Instagram!
A picture is worth a thousand words – and we want to share them all with you on Instagram! If you're active on this popular social network, follow us @SaveLakeWpg for photos, graphics and interesting facts about our great lake.
Bringing India’s monsoon season to the Gimli Film Festival
We’re proud to once again support the Gimli Film Festival (running this year from July 22 to 26) by sponsoring the 2015 screenings of Monsoon, a feature documentary from Canadian filmmaker Sturla Gunnarsson that introduces viewers to the beautiful/terrible spectacle that is India’s monsoon season.
This powerful film offers festival-goers the perfect opportunity to reflect on local freshwater issues and get engaged in the protection of one of Earth’s most precious natural resources.
We hope to see you at the lake this summer,
The LWF team
