An October event series, LWF in Mexico and more!

Dear LWF supporter,

Cottage season may be over for another year, but our work to restore and protect the health of our shared waters continues. We appreciate your ongoing support.

Thank you for a great summer

Our 2016 summer season was our busiest yet. We had a great time visiting lakeside communities, meeting supporters at outreach and fundraising events, and learning more about Manitoba’s amazing ecosystems. Check out our online photo gallery to see some of our favourite shots from this past summer!

Desjardins Financial Security Inc. presents Water Wednesdays with the Lake Winnipeg Foundation

Join us in Winnipeg’s Assiniboine Park this October for a free three-part series featuring local experts talking local water: from algae blooms to zebra mussels and everything in between.

We’ve invited journalists, researchers, policy-makers, advocates and on-the-ground practitioners – an eclectic group of people with a diversity of experiences and perspectives. Over the course of three uniquely different nights, we’ll be picking their brains about the challenges facing our shared waters and the opportunities for solutions.

Head to our website for more details. Hope to see you there!

LWF in Mexico

In 2014 LWF began a nation-to-nation relationship-building project with First Nation partners who live around Lake Winnipeg – work that led to the establishment of the Lake Winnipeg Indigenous Collective (LWIC). This project was supported through a grant program of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC), and LWF was invited to display results and learnings at the annual CEC gathering held earlier this month in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico.

LWF staffer Kirsten had the honour of representing LWF and LWIC at this gathering, which was an opportunity to bring the issues of Lake Winnipeg, cultural co-operation and a new vision for moving forward to the international stage. While there, she presented to Canada’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change Catherine McKenna, United States Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Gina McCarthy and Mexico’s Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources Rafael Pacchiano Alamán!

You can read more about LWF’s nation-to-nation relationship-building work and Kirsten’s trip on our website.

Welcome Johanna and Danyelle!

LWF continues to grow with the addition of new staff Johanna Théroux and Danyelle Allen.

As the Lake Winnipeg Indigenous Collective Coordinator, Johanna will be assisting LWIC with the planning of gatherings, meetings and other projects. Danyelle is LWF’s new Finance & Administration Manager, responsible for financial management and bookkeeping, donor database management and communications, and office reception.

Johanna and Danyelle bring a wealth of skills to LWF and we’re excited to be working alongside them.

Thank you for your interest in our great lake,

The LWF team
