Take action to protect Manitoba’s threatened wetlands

Dear LWF supporter,

Lake Winnipeg needs your immediate help.

In Decembers’ e-update, we encouraged you to take part in Manitoba Sustainable Development’s public consultations on proposed regulatory changes impacting drainage and wetland protection.

Since then we’ve conducted a thorough review of the Water Rights Regulation – and we are very concerned.

Wetland habitats provide a diversity of valuable benefits, including filtering algae-causing phosphorus from the water which flows through them. Protecting these threatened ecosystems protects Lake Winnipeg.

In June 2018, the guiding principle of no net loss of wetland benefits was enshrined in provincial legislation. As currently presented, however, the Water Rights Regulation does not adhere to this principle – and in fact, is likely to accelerate wetland destruction.

Please join us in advocating for sensible drainage regulations that will actually protect Manitoba’s threatened wetlands and improve water quality.

The deadline for feedback on the Water Rights Regulation is Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019. Submissions can be emailed to drainage@gov.mb.ca.

Thank you for taking action on this very important issue,

The LWF team
