Update: Thanks so much to everyone who joined us at this event! We've since been asked to share the advocacy letter templates we had brought with us. Here is the example of a letter you can send to your MLA or to a candidate running in the upcoming provincial election. Here is the example of a letter you can send to your Winnipeg city councillor. Remember: keep it short, personalize your message and ask for a response.

Join us in Grand Marais on July 6 to learn more about the challenges facing Lake Winnipeg and the boreal forest that surrounds it – and what we can do as individuals and...

We’re excited to be taking part in a not-to-be-missed event!

Alex Martin is a 19-year-old kayaker, local to Victoria Beach. Last summer, Alex paddled solo around the entire shoreline of Lake Winnipeg to raise awareness for water stewardship.

Presented by the Victoria Beach Walk for Water Committee, this evening event is your opportunity to hear from Alex about his adventure, enjoy his photo presentation captured from the remote coastlines of Lake Winnipeg, and learn how this experience has shaped his view of this important lake.

When: Wednesday, July 24, 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.)

Each year, lake-lovers of all ages channel their hobbies and talents into fundraising events for a healthy Lake Winnipeg: from lemonade stands to art shows to recreational activities!

Here are just some of the events and initiatives happening this summer:

Lake Winnipeg PaperCut Maps (ongoing initiative): Multi-media artist Gail Bacosa-Puhawan creates beautiful bathymetric maps of Manitoba lakes using cut paper, with relative depths illustrated by use of gradients of blue cardstock. Ten per cent of sales from her Lake Winnipeg piece will be donated to LWF. (Connect with Gail...

Hosted by Sun Country Arts and Crafts Inc. this Aug. 10 show showcases the work of local artisans and crafters, and will incorporate fundraising for LWF. Head indoors at the Victoria Beach Community Centre from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for the chance to purchase unique made-in-Manitoba products including pottery, jewelry, wood-working, fabric art, knitting, handmade soaps, gourmet foods and more.

Organized by a group of lake-lovers in Matlock, all proceeds raised from this community sale will be donated to LWF. The sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Corner of Community Rd and Dalton Ave, across from the tennis courts and Julia’s Restaurant. (If you can't make it to the Dunnottar Walk for Water the following day, sale organizers will also be taking donations!)

Dear LWF supporter,

We hope you’re having a great summer! We’ve really been enjoying the opportunity to visit lakeside communities, chat with members and supporters – and meet new ones!

Walk for Water 2019

Walk for Water season has arrived! Join us in Dunnottar this Sunday, July 28, and in Victoria Beach on Aug. 11 for the largest grassroots fundraising event in support of a healthy Lake Winnipeg.

Downloadable, printer-friendly pledge forms are available here – use one to collect donations, then bring the money you raise to one of this year’s events. Dunnottar walk registration begins at the Dunnottar Community Club; VB & District walk registration begins at the VB Clubhouse; both events start at 9:15 a.m. with the walk departing around 10 a.m. Don’t forget, after the walks, you’ll have the chance to try your luck at our Dunnottar fundraising raffle or bid in the VB auction – this year’s prizes are amazing!

Can’t make it out in person? Consider taking part in the Walk for Water 2019 online campaign, which runs until Sept. 1, 2019. You can sign up to fundraise as an individual or team, or simply make a donation. You can also help out by spreading the word with your networks!

Walk for Water is an opportunity to meet other lake-lovers, get some fresh air and exercise, and raise money for research, education, advocacy and other actions to address the root causes of harmful algae blooms. Want more information? Check out the Walk for Water FAQ page here.
