Phosphorus is the nutrient responsible for the blue-green algae blooms on Lake Winnipeg and other water bodies.

This growing, long-term monitoring program has been actively sampling since 2016. A new report highlights insights gained by analyzing citizen-generated phosphorus data from the 2017 and 2018 field seasons. Among them:

Update on wetland advocacy

In January, we encouraged you to take part in Manitoba Sustainable Development’s public consultations and advocate for drainage regulations that will protect Manitoba’s threatened wetlands and improve water quality.

We are now calling for a transparent and collaborative process to ensure public input is meaningfully integrated into the revised regulation. Last month, we sent a letter to the Minister of Sustainable Development requesting the publication of all public submissions received, alongside departmental analysis of the feedback. Similar letters were also submitted to Sustainable Development by our partners at Ducks Unlimited Canada, the International Institute for Sustainable Development and Keystone Agricultural Producers.

We continue to monitor this issue and will keep you updated as more information is available.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Dear LWF supporter,

In yesterday’s e-update, we invited you to join us at the Save the Lake Fish Fry in Gimli – but we shared the wrong date! To clarify, this event is taking place on Sunday, June 30. More details about what to expect can be found on our website, and on the Facebook event page.

Thank you to the lake-lovers who reached out to let us know about our mistake; we apologize for any confusion.

Sincerely,

The (slightly embarrassed) LWF team
